Sauveterre-de-Béarn

Sauveterre-de-Béarn is located at a geographical balance point between the Pyrenees and the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout the year, the town attracts a steady flow of visitors thanks to its medieval architecture, its riverside setting, and heritage landmarks such as the Pont de la Légende and the surrounding fortifications.

While the town itself has a population of approximately 1,400 inhabitants, the wider Béarn des Gaves region — of which it is part — records significant tourist activity, with more than one million visitors per year, including both day visitors and overnight stays.

Iconic sites such as the Pont de la Légende, the medieval ramparts, and the Maison du Gave serve as central points for discovery, interpretation, and cultural programming, making them among the most visited locations in the region.
The Pont de la Légende in particular remains one of the most photographed places in the area. Its position above the Gave d’Oloron, together with nearby cafés, historic walls, the Maison du Gave, and pedestrian arcades, creates a public environment naturally suited to an outdoor exhibition, inviting residents, tourists, and passers-by to pause, observe, and engage with the works on display.

Beneath the Maison du Gave lies the Art.Cade — the central exhibition space dedicated to photography and cultural programming in Sauveterre-de-Béarn.
